The First Draft of a Suit

The Basted Fitting: What It Is and Why It Matters

26 August 2022

A quiet step that makes all the difference.

In bespoke tailoring, not every step is visible. Some happen quietly behind the scenes — in chalk marks, loose stitches, and careful hands. The basted fitting is one of them, and for us, it’s essential.

Before your suit is completed, we create a rough version of it using temporary stitching. The structure is soft, the edges unfinished. The purpose is simple: to test the shape and make sure it feels right on you.

This stage allows us to refine balance, proportions, shoulder line, and sleeve pitch — the small details that make a custom suit feel natural rather than forced. It isn’t about achieving perfection on the first try; it’s about improving together, step by step.

Most ready-to-wear or made-to-measure suits skip this stage. It takes more time, more patience, and it isn’t always expected. But we believe it’s worth it — because the result is a garment that doesn’t just fit well, but fits you.

At SOGNI, we see the basted fitting as the foundation of true bespoke tailoring in Jakarta. It’s the quiet step that makes all the difference — and the reason our clients receive suits that feel as though they were always theirs.
